Student Loan - Top 10 Mistakes to Avoid in 2009

Author: Sally Croft

When you are taking out student loans, you want to get the best possible deal to benefit from the loans fully. The following are the top 10 things to avoid in 2009 with regard to student loans:

1 Avoid multiple lenders, do your best to deal with only one lender. If you have taken student loans from three or four different lenders, it is advisable that you opt for a student loan consolidation. With student loan consolidation, you benefit from a single lender, lower payments and extended repayment plans.

2 Avoid going with the first offer. Before taking the services of any lender, you need to shop around and take quotes from at least ten or fifteen lenders.

3 Avoid adjustable rates. Instead of opting for adjustable interest rates, choose fixed interest rates. The main advantage of fixed interest rates is that no matter the market condition, your interest rate and payment amount are not going to increase.

4 Avoid shortfalls with grace periods. When availing a Student Loan, it is your responsibility to ensure that you get a grace period of at least three months from the lender. During the grace period, you do not need to pay anything to the lender. This can help you in improving your financial condition.

5 Avoid lenders that do not set monthly installments of Student Loan on the basis of your financial condition. Lenders who set your payments according to your income usually have better borrower benefits.

6 Avoid private loans. When it comes to student loans, you have two options: private and federal. Getting approval for Federal Student Loans is quite easy compared to private student loans but it does not mean that you do not give it a try. Only apply for private student loans when it is clear that you are not going to get approval for federal student loans or when you have exhausted all forms of federal loans and still need money for school.

7 Avoid late payments. Pay all your monthly installments on time so your credit rating improves. Some students take monthly installments very casually thinking that it is not going to affect their financial future. What they do not realize is that any delay in monthly installments is going to have a negative impact on their credit rating.

8 Avoid signing anything before you read it carefully. Read the terms and conditions of your student loan before signing because once you sign the agreement you will not be able to modify the terms and conditions of the loan.

9 Avoid extra fees. When selecting lenders for your student loan, make sure that they are not charging any sort of processing or application fee.

10 Avoid giving out more information than is necessary. When availing Student Loan, make sure that lender does not demand too many papers because there is a greater chance of your information getting lost or stolen.

    Hello Friends,

Here I want to share something with all you all. Quite recently I have come across a site http://loanbased.com/. Well nothing extra ordinary about the site except that this site is ripping content from StudentLoanBlog & that even quite on regular basis. What upsets me is despite earlier warnings & intimations they continue to plagiarize our content. Check out how they have used this post on: http://loanbased.com/?p=816. On positive note we are taking legal action against them, hope that would help them learning a lesson.

  15. Experts say that the U.S. dollar will collapse as China and Russia are changing their currency reserves from dollars to euro. I think the future is good fore those who get loans in euros or try to receive education in Europe.

Going bankrupt is such a common thing nowadays that my teachers say you are very special if you are able to make all your payments on time. I am one of those students who can manage all.

  22. Sally Croft says:

@ takarítás: Although I half-heartedly agree with your teacher but yes she is quite correct about people unable to make payments on time.

Hey but all the very best to you, because nothing is impossible and when there is a will there CERTAINLY is a way!

  23. Konyvelo says:

I wonder what will happen when all the credit cards will start falling. Banks are in big trouble now. I still have over 10 000 dollars debt to pay after my cards. If I lose my job I might default.

  24. As the employment rate is rising many banks will have to start reconsidering providing loans without much proof of income. I think the big crisis has just started and when people will default on their credit cards the whole system might collapse again.

  25. I agree with the statement that the crisis has only begun. We stil have to endure it for a while.

  26. What can we do if we all have lived off all of our savings?
Getting loans would just start a catch 22.

  28. It’s becoming increasingly difficult to afford college these days; I know because I’ve been helping my nephew to pay for his school; it seems that between the loans and scholarships there still isn’t enough to always cover tuition, books, etc. Hopefully they will approve more student loans….

  29. There are some signs of recovering, but the journey will be longer than expected. According to analysts the first period of growth will be in next year.

  30. I agree that the recovery will start at the beginning of next year although there seem to go bankrupt more and more banks every month. I am positive though regarding the whole economy.

  31. More and more banks go bankrupt. The deficit is over a 1 trillion dollar. I wonder how inflation can be lowered.

I believe good old fashioned upbringing, education, with modern tech applications will be the light at the end of the tunnel.

One literally can have more than an rounded or specialized education but of course institutionalized learning has always been an ideal of finishing something once started.

    Good feedback. Thanks.
