When Obama mentioned to a 11 year old student reporter Damon Weaver that he planned to make a back- to- school speech, even he would not have expected such mixed reactions and so much hype. It was just a simple inspirational speech that schools were encouraged (not ordered!) to be broadcast. However, many schools did not do that after the controversy.
One parent says,” I sent my children to school to be educated NOT indoctrinated.”
While another states, “The fact that people want to keep their kids from hearing the President of the united states encourage them to do well in school shows a true level of ignorance.”
All said and done, the speech hit the air on September 8th. It was really inspirational and is sure to have touched a chord in most of the students’ hearts.
The Obama’s back-to-school speech had a few great highlights to be remembered by all students:
- Students should realize their responsibilities.
- They should work hard in developing their talents, skills and intellect.
- Even those who face challenges and difficulties were encouraged to do their homework and develop a positive attitude.
- Students should respect their teachers, not cut class, talk back to teachers or drop out of school.
- Students were asked by Obama to set goals for their education and do all they can to meet them.
Some excerpts from his speech are given below to inspire you:
“If you get a bad grade, that doesn’t mean you’re stupid, it just means you need to spend more time studying.”
“No one’s born being good at things; you become good at things through hard work.”
“And even when you’re struggling, even when you’re discouraged, and you feel like other people have given up on you - don’t ever give up on yourself. Because when you give up on yourself, you give up on your country.”
“The story of America isn’t about people who quit when things got tough. It’s about people who kept going, who tried harder, who loved their country too much to do anything less than their best.”
