Getting an early start on your financial aid application is a sure way to get the maximum amount of financial assistance possible. If you wait till the very last minute to submit your financial aid application, you may miss the application deadline and the amount of aid you receive. So get an early start by applying for financial help such as grants and scholarships.

Here are 7 simple steps to beating the shortage of college financial aid.

1. Fill out the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid) and submit as soon as possible.

2. Apply for scholarships early because scholarships are awarded on first come, first serve basis.

3. Instead of attending the college of your dreams, attend one that offers you more financial assistance. Some colleges may offer a more generous financial package than others.

4. Focus on getting good grades to qualify for scholarships.

5. Cut back on college expenses whenever possible so that you won’t need to borrow too much. Instead of staying in a dorm, you can live at home, choose a less expensive college or university, and take online classes instead of commuting to campus, and so on.

6. Have a back-up plan just in case there is a shortage of scholarships or financial aid available. Use savings to help offset college expenses instead of taking out loans.

The Advantage of Applying Early for Financial Aid

If you are in need of financial assistance and you apply early, you will receive a decision and notification of financial aid soon after your have completed and submitted the application. However, applying late does not mean that you will not qualify for any financial aid. By submitting you application late, you might miss out on the amount of aid you receive because the college’s resources may be limited by then.

Taking the 6 simple steps to beating the shortage of college financial aid can improve your chances of getting the money you need to pay for your college education. You are much likely to get more financial assistance and spend less on college when you take the necessary steps to increase your chances of getting the help you need.

The average cost for a college education per academic year is around $20,000. Most students today are finding it extremely difficult to pay the bill. However, this is where scholarships and grants for college students play an important role. The purpose of grants is to make higher education affordable for students who need it the most. Scholarships are awarded based on many factors like GPA, race, major, and so on.

Grants and scholarships are both free money that students do not have to pay back. However, obtaining them has a few prerequisite that must be fulfilled. For example, grants are awarded only to financially needy students to help defray the cost of an education. Students that fall into the category of needy and can prove that they have a financial need are eligible for grant money. Scholarships on the other hand are awarded based on a student’s athletic ability, grade point average, nationality, area of study, etc.

Finding Education Grants and College Scholarships by Categories

When looking for college funding, there are a few categories that students can look, for example:

Minority grants

Student-specific

Level of degree

Academic scholarships

Subject-specific

Leadership scholarships

Scholarships for women

A few reliable sources for these funding are through federal and state government, organizations, and universities and colleges.

Federal Grant Programs

Federal grant programs like the Pell Grant, Academic Competitiveness (AC) grant, and the National Science and Mathematics Access to Retain Talent Grant, are available to students looking to fund their higher education. There are also state’s grant programs that are awarded to residents of the state based on different factors like merit, financial need, and major.

In Conclusion

Grants and scholarships are programs that give students the financial aid they need to cover the rising cost of tuition and other college related expenses. There are many sources out there for free money which does not have to be paid back, unlike loans. However the key is that students need to keep searching until they find a match. There are all types of funding available to meet every need, so don’t stop searching.

Google is giving a $250,000 grant to help close the gap between the haves and the have-nots in technology educations. iGotITtoo, is an organization which trains communities that have been left behind in the technology revolution. Google has pledged the money to this group so that it can increase its effort to the whole city of New York.

Societies Grow Reliance on Tech Education

Society has evolved technologically and it is increasingly dependent upon it. The digital world is divided along socioeconomic lines when it comes to knowledge and access to skills needed to interact with this technology driven society. This status quo leaves many in our nation left behind when it comes to:

Jobs

Resources

Information

Organization helping to close the Tech Education Gap

iGotITtoo is a group that does not seek profit. This organization works to end this digital divide in the New York City’s Burroughs and communities that have been left behind and underserved. They offer a service that is unique and opportunities in these places intending to empower the people in them with technology.

iGotITtoo Tech Education Beginnings in New York

The group started in 2007, and its name is an abbreviation of “I’ve got information technology, too.” Its offices are in the Brooklyn area in New York City, and the organizations members are striving to make sure that all peoples in the area have access to technology and its tools. The ones who began iGotITtoo started training in a community center. They gave computer classes to close the growing technology gap. After this, more and more people became interest in taking the lessons. These volunteers have now grown to over 2 dozen at three different locations in the Brooklyn area.

Google Donation will fund iGotITtoo’s Expansion of Tech Education

The leader of this effort stated recently that the goal of this operation is expansion throughout the city of New York during this current year. This is when Google responded with its generous grant to assist them in their expansion effort.

Many ways to help with Tech Education

This donation will go a long way in helping the organization reach its goals. Other ways individuals, companies and organizations can help with this effort are:

Volunteering to teach

Giving new or used technology equipment

Helping with outreach initiatives

Assisting with community engagement

Help with Tech Education everywhere

If you believe that, many places and locations around the world can benefit from programs like iGotITtoo or you would like to congratulate Google for its generous donation leave a statement in the comments section below. Let us hope that more companies are willing to help in the effort of tech education.

These days, colleges and universities are cutting back financial aid and incomes in most families are down. New incoming college students in the beginning of the year will have to get loans to cover cost and fees they can not afford. Already, the average student loan debt for those that graduated in 2007 was almost $25,000, with those attending private colleges and universities left with a debt averaging nearly $30,000.

Relief from Student Loan Debt Payments

A newly introduced government loan program, called Income-Based Repayment, that started on July 1, 2009 allowed some federal student loan borrowers to lower their monthly loan payments, base on income and size of their families will help somewhat.

Is Taking On Student Loan Debt Worth It?

For a long time now, everyone has championed the cause of a higher education. From the time you start grade school, Americans are sold the idea that an advanced college degree will equate to a high paying job upon graduation. However, is this still true? Does a college degree equate to financial security at any cost no matter how much debt is incurred? New data suggests that taking on huge debt my not be a sound strategy for secure financial future.

Size of Student Loan Debt Increasing

Sometime ago, financing a college degree included great scholarships, grants and a small amounts of loan debt. But now with college fees and tuitions skyrocketing, and less grants monies available, most college students today are left with no choice but to take on large amount of debt.

Student Loan Debt is a Heavy Burden

So in the times we live in today we have those with college degrees that are poor, with massive amounts student loan debt, leaving more and more college grads and professionals just starting out, left out of the home buying market and unable to start a family.

Advantages of a College Education

On the other side of the debate some say that too much has been made out of the amount debt taken on by many of today’s college graduates. Many say that the amount of debt incurred by college students is over estimated and most college grads do not carry much of a student loan debt burden. Most graduating college students have a modest amount of student loan debt that is easily managed with a little effort. The average university student loan deal is about $20,000 about the same as the average car loan. A car losses value as soon as it is driven away forms the dealer, but college education is an investment in you that will gain its bearer income throughout a lifetime.

Student Loan Debt is a Lifetime Investment

If you think of a college degree as an investment, a college degree, with a $25,000 debt attached to it is a good investment and you can expect to see dividends in the future with it. The average income of someone with a degree in the America is almost $53,000 annually, with someone with only a secondary school education earning just about $32,000 every year. The advantage of a college degree is clear even with a high debt ratio because these loans will be paid for eventually.
