How College Taught Me to be a Better Financier?

As a college student living on a small budget, you will find that the way you used to spend money will drastically change. Once you enter college life, things will be a bit different. Don’t get me wrong, you can still have lots of fun, but in a cheaper way. As the real world is staring you straight in the face, you have to become more responsible and make some adjustments about how you spend your money.

Take a look at how college helps you to be a better financier.

  • Learn how to cook meals. Eating out on a daily basis is costly. You can save a lot of money by preparing your own meals and snacks. Learning how to make simple meals can save you a bundle of money over time.
  • Shop economically. Set aside a monthly budget for shopping and do not go over the budget.
  • Only buy items on sale. Only buy items on sale do comparison shop and buy the cheapest item. Comparison shopping requires a little extra time, but it is well worth saving a few extra bucks.

  • Buy things that you need and not things that you want. Only buy the things that you really need. Only shop for the things you want when they go on sale, and only if you can afford them.
  • Stay away from brand names. Buy store brand, they taste just as good and they cost much less.
  • Shop at thrift stores instead of shopping at the mall. You’ll be amazed at some of the things you can find at your neighborhood thrift store and at a reasonable price.
  • Use coupons. Use coupons when grocery shopping. This could save you lots of money that you can use to open a savings account or use as an emergency fund.

As a college student, you will be making some major changes in the way you spend money. These are some of the changes I had to make while in college. I hope how college taught me to be a better financier, will teach you the same.
