8 Job Hunting Tips for Fresh Graduates
After completing college, the next hurdle for students is to find suitable employment. Not all students will land the perfect job. Due to fierce competition, college graduates must know the best measures are taken that will give them an advantage over their fellow applicants. It is important to note that landing the best jobs is not solely dependent on academic qualifications. Employers always look for the most rounded individual that can make the most contribution to the organization.

Several strategies that can be implemented can assist fresh college graduates landing the best jobs. Now these suggestions are not the only measures that can be taken, and may differ from one state to another in their effectiveness. Overall, they should go a far way in you, the fresh college graduate, being employed.

1. Resume: Your resume provides your first introduction to the organization. As the saying goes “first impression is the last”. Get an interview just by the presentation of your resume. Make your resume look professional. No one wants to read a novel when they open your application. Provide only information that is important and relevant to the job. Always include a professional email address; nothing like cutiepie@whatever.com. Always remember that most organizations will not have the time to call you back. Always spell checkand proof read before submission. Always inform your references about their inclusion on your resume.
2. Research: Do some research on the organization and, if possible, those who will interview. Showing some knowledge about the organization shows a proactive attitude. While you are at it establish ways how you could be of benefit to the organization. Most employers are most interested in this aspect of the interview.
3. Start Early: Start the job hunting process as early as possible. If you know that you will be graduating at the end of the semester, start sending out applications once you have passed the halfway mark. Most companies take some time to respond. Therefore, by the time you complete your studies, you should begin to start receiving responses for your applications.
4. Networking: Networking is one of the best methods of landing jobs. Make contacts through lob seeking sites and social networking site such as Facebook, Twitter, MySpace and Google Buzz. Do not limit yourself to newspaper ads.
5. College Career Center: Always maintain a close relationship with your college career center. Colleges often get job offers from various organizations.
6. Attend Job Fairs: Most colleges and associations host job fairs. Always attend these job fairs and fill out application forms from organizations in which you have an interest.
7. Use a wide Drag Net: We will not always get our preferred job in the first go. Be prepared to seek alternative employment. This will give you some experience in the working world and more depth to your resume. It also acts as a reference about your work ethics.
8. Get used to the competition: Always remember that you are not the only one applying for the job. If one is not successful, pick your sock up and keep on chugging.

If I may make a slight branching off from this point, consider starting a blog. Blog about your industry and take it seriously. This way, you can prove in an interview that you really do have an interest in the industry. And if your blog got popular, that’s just one more way of getting your name out there.

I’ll give a few more tips from my “JOB HUNTING MADE EASY” book: (1) Put Achievements in your resume — e.g., awards, honors, measurable job accomplishments, etc. Hiring managers LOVE seeing you actually accomplished great things in addition to earning your degree. (2) Stop using common college student phrases that sound unprofessional, e.g., “like” or “you know?” or “Oh, my god!” While such phrases abound on college campuses, you lose points in interviews, because you sound unprofessional & unserious about fitting into work environment.
