Campus Life – How To Avoid Becoming A Geek??

Author: Sally Croft
Being a Geek at Campus….

It is all about who you are at the campus which makes all the difference. Your hobbies and passion defines who you are? Do you love maths or science? Or feel at home with computers aka notebooks? Do you just have few decimals left in your scorecard to reach the hundred marks? Does your passion about sporting sizes you up into a different individual altogether? Then, I am sure you are “a geek”!

Not necessarily all geeks are personified with those thick glasses, looks akin to potato sacks or a characteristic of pure obsession towards star trek series. With changing times geeks are better known as style icons and hip individuals who carry the most ravishing personality ever ;)

Campus Life
Does It Really Help Being A Geek At A College Campus?

All I would say is “it just isn’t easy being a geek” at college. Geeks are personified as somebody who just cannot enjoy life or some one who has only his brain working. Geeks just do not find a place among others in the college. They either hide themselves from bullies or escape to finish the most enthralling computer game. Any individual with extreme passion and lack of social consciousness is portrayed a geek.

Fitting into their peer groups is really hard. Their tenacity at hobbies is simply amazing, wondering their reach and height of accomplishments. If you were to question a geek, it is more appropriate to know what he/she just cannot do. The list of can’s outnumber the cannot’s. They are ardent music fans; he/she is a handyman to the most frustrating problems ever to be fixed; he/she has a list of items to explore in their leisurely times; an articulate speaker with diction most enviable; a geek’s passion for accomplishments is just out of reach for others (normal individuals) :) .

It is their perfection and commitment which makes it hard for them to get along with others in the college. They are sure to hold some senior positions in the R&D department just like Mark Cotes whose passion for cycles made him a researcher at MIT Centre for Sports Innovation while he was still an undergraduate.

Geeks And Academics Laurels

From an academics point of view, being a geek alone can fetch you the best of jobs and recognitions, no doubt! But again, that alone won’t help. Normal interaction and getting along is essential. Rather than being a freak it is always better to go with the flow with no abnormalities.

A geek’s authority over his subject knowledge is unquestionable. They are born that way. It is very often their social interaction skills and the way they carry themselves which is more a barrier then a blessing.

Well, life is not just about researching and accomplishments, it is about living in the first place. Again, one can never pretend to be a geek, one should be. It is more to do with the nature of the individual than willingness.

The question of avoiding becoming a geek is easily said than done. If the your nature matches with that of a ‘geek’ make sure to ward off the crazy and disturbing attitude, just to ensure you go with the crowd ;) !!
