Bogged down in Student Loan Debt: How to survive…

Author: Sally Croft

Most of us get into debt with student loans to some degree. You already know going into your higher education that you will have to take out some loans. Whether it is a few thousand or over a hundred thousand, you know you have to pay the loans back eventually. The majority of students take out around $12,000 in loans to pay for an undergraduate degree; substantially more for a graduate degree or higher like MD or JD. If you are already bogged down in debt, you need to learn how to survive. The following tips will help you deal with Student Loan debt and pay back the loans without going delinquent.

  • Start paying back the loans:The first step to getting out from under Student Loan Debt is actually starting to pay the loans off. Whether you are just coming out of the grace period or if you are delinquent or even default, you need to get payments in to the lenders. Most Student Loans have a grace period of 6 to 9 months before you have to start paying so you can use that time to save up for making payments. If you have missed payments and are delinquent or have missed enough to have gone into default, you need to contact the lenders and get a payment plan going. There are many ways to handle payments according to your financial status and most lenders are quite flexible.
  • Avoid missing payments:Once you start making payments, keep making them on time and in full. You should have a financial plan in place that includes the loan payments so you do not have any reason to miss payments. When you get a bill, open it and make sure it is paid on time to avoid extra charges. If you know you will be unable to make payments due to financial difficulty, contact your lender about a deferment or forbearance for your loan. This will allow you to postpone payments without being penalized by the lender or have your credit score ruined.
  • Handle any mistakes:If you miss a payment, or know you will, contact the lender. This makes you look like a responsible borrower and helps you to avoid finance charges. In some cases, you can have charges removed if you just call the company.
  • Consider cancellation:Some careers and areas in the country are ripe for loan cancellation. Taking a job in the medical field or teaching can be a step in that direction as these fields are in high demand but do not have enough people filling the positions. You can also consider moving to a rural area or a “depressed” area where there is a further increased need for people in important positions like school teachers, government attorneys and nurses.
  • Consider consolidation:One of the easiest ways to deal with Student Loan Debt is consolidating the loans. This can be done with various types of Student Loans and include outstanding credit card debt and other bills. If you are considering consolidation you need to shop around as much as possible and get the best possible deal because you will be paying this loan off for years to come.
