In 1979, when I was beginning college, the prime interest rate was 11.5 percent and student loans were at 3.4 percent — or 70 percent below prime. Now, the prime rate is 5.25 percent yet student loans are 8.5 percent (and adjustable) — or 57 percent above prime. What is going on?

Good point Wanieda! Partly to blame I am sure are private student loan companies lobbying efforts.

Sally – You list the benefits of ACS, but neglect to mention the downsides of ACS. Two big ones being that they outsource most of their work – it is impossible to actually talk to somebody in America when calling with questions or problems. The second is they frequently make mistakes on accounts and are slow to fix these mistakes, but quick to report to credit agencies for missed payments or underpayments (even if it is due to their errors). I am curious – did you receive a payment from ACS for this report – it is more propaganda then anything else.

  3. Sally Croft says:

@ Jen: Thanks for your comment Jen and mentioning the downsides of ACS, I will consider them when doing the continuation for the article. Well I am a freelancer and work on my own, I never receive payments for doing reports on Student Loan Blog. I work on popular topics and one that interest students/parents and that’s the only reason for doing this post too.
However I really appreciate your writing to us. Your comment made me do further research on ACS Loan.

  32. Garret says:

ACS is a part of a larger scam ran by larger banks and our beloved Department of Education. They “buy up” loans under dubious circumstances and then proceed to give you the jerk around for some time. They will mess your credit up regardless of the mistakes they make, not credit accounts when payments are received, not apply extra payments to principal, etc. YOU MUST send an electronic payment to ACS to ensure your account is not screwed. If I ever find the physical location of this company, I will burn it to the ground.
