Effective Time Management for College Students

Author: Sally Croft
Need for Time Management

Time is the only thing precious on this earth because once you lose it, you can never get it back. As a college student, various different classes, activities and entertainments fight to get your attention. Unless and until you manage your time effectively and efficiently, you will not be able to handle it all. So, learn time management techniques. As a starter, some are tested below:

1 - Have To-Do Lists :

Whether in a personally written organizer or on your computer, it is a good idea to have to-do lists for the year, month, week and day. You can keep reviewing them, making changes, etc. This will help you focus on the right things and put ‘first things first’.

2 - Prioritize:

Even in your to-do list, you need to prioritize. An assignment that needs to be submitted tomorrow is more important than dance rehearsals for next weeks show. So, do that first.

Time Management
3 - Set Realistic Goals:

Don’t be over ambitious. Don’t try to fit all into one day. It is okay to put in a little more and try to push yourself a bit but don’t overdo it. Or else, your everyday to-do list will always run undone.

4 - Stay Organized:

Keep your personal space, stuff, books and papers organized or else half of your time will go waste in searching for things.

5 - Stay Focused:

You may be multi-tasking a college degree, part time job, friends and all, but you need to stay focused on only one activity at a particular point of time. You shouldn’t talk to a friend over phone as you write your homework. Do one at a time and you will do it better and faster.

6 - Get Up Early:

You are sure to this piece of time-worn advice but believe me-it works! When you put in an extra hour in the early morning you get more done, a head-start to the day and more free time in the evenings.

7 - Have a Study Strategy:

Have a plan on how you will proceed with your studies. Remember it will be better for you if you tackle the tougher subject first rather than the easier ones.

Stay Organized
8 - Set Time Slots :

If you have a plan to study the first 3 chapters in Macro Economics this week, set the number of hours you will need for each chapter and the time slots where you will find those hours.

9 - Don’t Get Overwhelmed:

Certain projects, subjects or chapters can be dry, dull, huge or overwhelming. Don’t get frightened by them and don’t put them away. Just break them into smaller easily- manageable chunks and do each chunk piece by piece. Before you notice, the entire project will be done.

10 - Stick to Your Plans:

There will be many days when you will want to be anywhere else but in your study- slogging for your exams. But, think of the far future and all the benefits this degree will get you. Inspire yourself to stick to your plans.

11 - Reduce Commuting Time:

One big time-waster is commuting. If you need to study and work, see if you can find a job on the campus. This way, you will save on commuting time. Or else you can try for freelance or work from home jobs.

12 - Reward Yourself:

Give yourself small rewards for completing tasks like a night-out partying for completing a major college project. This way, you will also have fun and enjoy your college life too.

Effective time management for college students is absolutely essential if you want to have a fun filled life wherein you have achieved all your dreams too.

Risk of cosigning a Student Loan – What you should remember?

Author: Sally Croft

If you have been approached by your friend or a family member for financial help, it is quite important that you take decision wisely. There are lots of risks associated with cosigning a student loan. To start with, if the person you have co-signed with does not pay loan amount on time, it will be your responsibility to pay the loan amount. Cosigning is a method through which people with bad credit can get loan without worrying about their credit score.

Negative impact on your Credit Rating

If the person you have cosigned with does not pay monthly installments on time, it will have a negative impact on your credit rating. Once your credit rating deteriorates, it is not easy to resurrect it. Improving credit score takes plenty of time and you need to be very disciplined in order to achieve it. Before cosigning a student loan, make sure that you check the financial condition of other cosigner first. There is no point cosigning a student loan if the monthly source of income of other cosigner is not up to the mark. To get a better feel of cosigner financial condition, check their bank account details.

According to recent study of Federal Trade Commission, of all the co-signed loans that enter into the category of default, as many as six out of eight co-signers are needed to repayment of loan. Remember, your family member has taken your assistance after facing rejection from the financial institution because of their bad credit rating. Financial institutions normally reject student loan applications when they believe that borrower is quite a risk for them. In this scenario, financial institutions are left with no other option than to ask for a co-signer.

What will happen if the other co-signer misses a payment?

In majority of US states, if the other co-signer misses a payment, financial institution will come directly to you rather than contacting the actual borrower. In some cases, you will also be required to pay late fees that are applicable to the actual borrower. If you have put anything in the form of collateral, financial institution is given a full freedom by the US law to recover their loan amount by selling your collateral. Do not put anything as collateral until and unless you are sure of the credibility of your family member or friend. Before co-signing, be clear in your mind whether you can afford the debt amount or not. If the answer is no, tell your relative clearly your financial condition is such that you cannot afford any additional burden.
